Astrid Voss knew the ice had heard her.
Not metaphorically. Beneath her left boot, the ice had made a short, bright sound, almost like the strike of a typewriter key. A vein of tension ran through the frozen bay, leapt from crack to crack and vanished into the wind. Five men turned their heads. The sixth, Chief Radio Operator Rehbein, sat in the timber hut before his transmitter and heard nothing but the hiss in his headphones.
